Meditation - Exploring the Mind

In our fast paced society where we are constantly ‘doing’ and we have stimulus coming at us from all directions, meditation provides the opportunity to still the mind for self-awareness, for healing and to take time out from the busyness of life. Meditation gives us the opportunity to check in with ourselves and to observe the inner landscape of our mind.

It is important to approach meditation from a place of love and kindness towards ourselves and come from a place of non-judgement, adopting the role of being the curious observer.

Some days it can be more challenging than others to stop ‘doing’ and sit to meditate.

Here are some tips that can help you settle into meditation:

  • Avoid eating in the hour prior to meditation
  • A bath or shower can wash off and “cleanse” the day
  • Ensure you are comfortable. Think about clothing, temperature, lighting levels
  • Have some time out before meditation, such as reading or pottering in the garden
  • Yoga postures or asanas can help prepare the body and mind
  • Pranayama or breathing exercises (often done as part of a yoga class) can help clear the mind
  • Rituals such as lighting a candle, burning some incense or playing some calming music can often be a trigger to unwind and relax preparing for meditation.
